Alums in town

PucKato stopped by the Mankato Golf Club on Monday at the end of the annual Dan Myer Golf Classic, which raises money for the MSU Blue Line Club. It was nice to see a few old faces there, including alumni David Backes, Travis Morin and Andy Hedlund. Recent grads Rylan Galiardi, Ben Youds, Channing Boe and Andy Sackrison were also there playing, while current players Michael Dorr, Adam Mueller, Mike Louwerse, Josh Nelson and Evan Mosey were present.

found this very interesting from Timothy Bogger, Sioux student.

Returning points in the WCHA
26 07 2011

A quick note, something I ran across while working on preview articles for the upcoming season. Don’t get too excited, I’m working at a slow pace so they are done quickly and without as many errors as last year’s.

Anywho, I considered all of the talk of “Team A is returning a lot of offense” and “Team B is losing everything next year” and wondered how output will change. And so I dove into collegehockeystats.net and came up with a few very interesting stats.

The first question: What are the teams with the most points returning to their roster?

1. Colorado College 292 (out of 391)

2. Denver 233 (out of 357)

3. St Cloud State 221 (out of 314)

4. Minnesota-Duluth 218 (out of 398)

5. Nebraska-Omaha 216 (out of 348)

6. Minnesota State 193 (out of 279)

7. Wisconsin 183 (out of 357)

8. North Dakota 177 (out of 471)

9. Michigan Tech 169 (out of 196)

10. Minnesota 151 (out of 294)

11. Alaska-Anchorage 150 (out of 244)

12. Bemidji State 138 (out of 234)

A few things jump out. First, the sheer number of points UND had last year helped them out in this category. But as you’ll see a little later, the fallout from losing the Pony Express, Jason Gregoire, and Brett Hextall still hurts.

Second, Colorado College returns a lot, a lot more than people realize. And they are a formidable team that probably is worth more than #8.

Third, what happened to Minnesota? [crickets]

Now let’s switch it up a little bit and see proportions. What team returns the highest percentage of their 2010-11 point output?

1. Michigan Tech 86.2%

2. Colorado College 74.7%

3. St Cloud State 70.4%

4. Minnesota State 69.2%

5. Denver 65.3%

6. Nebraska-Omaha 62.1%

7. Alaska-Anchorage 61.5%

8. Bemidji State 59.0%

9. Minnesota-Duluth 54.8%

10. Minnesota 51.4%

11. Wisconsin 51.3%

12. North Dakota 37.6%

Colorado College is also very high on this list. And it will please Mel Pearson greatly to know that Michigan Tech returns nearly all of their scoring “power.”

Finally, here are the teams who return the most goals from last season, as well as percentage.

1. Colorado College 104 (73% of 143)

2. Denver 98 (72% of 136)

3. Nebraska-Omaha 84 (66% of 128)

4. Minnesota State 82 (78% of 105)

5. St Cloud State 81 (72% of 314)

6. Minnesota (62% of 113)

7. Minnesota-Duluth 69 (48% of 143)

8. Michigan Tech 68 (91%!!!! of 75)

9. Wisconsin 53 (41% of 129)

10. Alaska-Anchorage 50 (56% of 89)

11. Bemidji State 48 (54% of 89)

12. North Dakota 47 (26% of 178)

There you have it. You may draw your own conclusions.

MSU is right there and with the maturity of the returner's + newby's, it will be a good year.
