Mavericks slip to sixth

Minnesota State dropped from third to sixth in the national opinion polls on Monday following their elimination from the WCHA tournament. The Mavericks are also sixth in the Pairwise Rankings and look to be a No. 2 seed in a yet-to-be-determined NCAA regional.

Here is the USCHO poll. The USA Today/USA Hockey poll can be found here.

It was fun to watch the Mavs playing some great hockey all season long. While I'm disappointed they won't play for the Sauer Trophy this weekend, they probably need the rest more than they need another game. Now, they should be fresh and ready for the NCAA tourney in two weeks.

I've been reviewing the Bracketology column on USCHO every Wednesday since January, and if my interpretation is correct, MSU is likely to get a #2 seed in one of the regionals. However, if Duluth also hangs on to a #2 seed, I think they (UMD) would be sent to Sioux Falls (with St. Cloud) and MSU would be shipped out east. Hope I'm wrong on that one, Shane.

Finally, its good that the WCHA will get 2 teams to the dance this year. Maybe if there are some upsets in this weekend's tournament a third WCHA team could sneak in. Wouldn't that be cool!
