The Mavericks got to three and beat the 10th-ranked Badgers 3-1 Friday before a crowd of 4,121 at the Alltel Center.
Special teams were the key. Not only did Minnesota State score two power-play goals (snapping an 0 for 16 slump) but they impressively killed off five penalties, including two 5-on-3 power plays that totaled 3 minutes, 14 seconds, including a full 2 minutes in the game's final seven minutes.
“That was a long two minutes,” said freshman forward Rylan Galiardi, who had a goal and an assist but was in the penalty box with Brian Kilburg during that final kill. Joel Hanson and Jon Kalinski were the heroes there, not leaving the ice during the kill.
Geoff Irwin scored the game-winning goal on a power play in the second period, and Mick Berge scored his eighth goal of the season just 13 seconds after Wisconsin's Kyle Turris opened the game's scoring.
Irwin also had an assist for a two-point game, and another penalty killer extrordinaire, R.J. Linder, had two assists.

Great game by the mavs. Berge's goal was huge. He's been a key guy all year long. Davis is a great playmaker out there. Always has his head up and ready to make a great pass to start a break. Keep it up MAVS. Let's hope Zach is in goal again this evening to keep his roll going.

A question for your next round -- with the way this team always struggles early in the year to get going, and especially this year with the road schedule, what are the schools options in regards to setting up pre-season games? I don't believe we had any pre-season games or exhibition games before going to MTU. Hell, lets even get a game with Gustavus or something. I think we need something other than the intra-squad thing to get the team going for a season.
i figured the word acceptable might be confused as harsh.
Last nights game was exceptional in terms of MSU play. it's probably the best game i've seen them play in 5 years.
i use the word acceptable because i want them to play that way every single night. i also realize you can't play an exceptional game every night, but if our standards of acceptable are raised, exceptional will be raised too. then we can really see a push towards becoming a top tier wcha school.
