Another one-goal loss for the Mavericks.
The ninth of the season. The eighth in WCHA play. The seventh against the top five teams in the conference.
But on Friday at the Kohl Center, the Mavericks did it differently. This time, they committed a season-high 16 penalties and put the third-ranked Badgers' potent power play on the ice 12 times. Thanks to some phenomenal goaltending by Phil Cook (40 saves, 33 in the first two periods), Minnesota State killed off the first seven of them and even had a 1-0 lead on a pretty goal by Mike Louwerse.
But the dam broke late in the second period when Zach Harrison and Kurt Davis were called for separate penalties during a scramble in front of Cook's crease, giving Wisconsin a full, two-minute 5x3 power play.
Michael Davies quickly scored two goals 31 seconds apart, and, after another MSU penalty, Blake Geoffrion made it 3-1 with less than a minute remaining in the period. Geoffrion had three assists for a four-point game.
Staying with the penalty theme, the two teams traded short-handed goals in the third period -- Aaron Bendickson for the Badgers and Zach Harrison for the Mavericks -- and MSU's Kael Mouillierat gave MSU a last gasp by scoring on a penalty shot with 1 minute remaining in the game.
The Mavericks had 24 shots on UW goalie Scott Gudmandson.

Stop already with the "another one goal loss".
It's SIMPLE - STAY OUT of the box. while some calls were justified, we have to simply limit stupid, selfish penalties. Otherwise, sit those guys.
As far as bad calls, yes there were several and to call two guys at the same time? That said, we put ourselves in that position.
And what about this quote Jutts;
“There were some differences in opinions there,” Eaves said of the conversation between the referees and the linesmen. “We’ll definitely be making a call here (to the league office).”
Jutts, you should be making a call also about the numerous "no calls" on WI!!!
When we scored first, that was huge and seemed like the boys could win this one.
So, since we do not score pretty goals, we need to get more guys going to the net and just shoot the puck more. It's gritty play and dirty goals that this team needs to do.
Hope to make tonight's game an see the MAVS start this game the way they finished last night!
GO MAVS
We will always have trouble scoring 5 on 5 if we refuse to use our D. Every team we play drops 5 to the circles or lower and we are playing 5 on 3 with no space. All we have to do is give our D the puck and force their forwards to stay out higher. You would think we could fiqure that out.
Ditto on using the D to create more offensive space.
We bring in two new D this year. One is a basic stay at home D. The other lead his JR league in scoring over the play-offs, yet he is rarely played? Hello, we need scoring which he seemed to contribute last year according to his bio.
Don't want to sound like a Vikings fan - wait until next year I guess?
