Will Bruess be back?

That seems to be the big question surrounding the Minnesota State men's hockey team now that the season is over. I asked Trevor Bruess about his future shortly after Saturday's loss to Wisconsin. He was pretty quiet, pretty dejected. "I don't know," he said. "I don't want to talk about it right now."

he will not be back...he already has a hand full of teams getting ready to make offers. he'll be gone within a week, 2 at the latest.

Yeah, he's gone. A friend of his told me Anaheim was trying to get him to leave last season. It'll be interesting to see where he goes. His "overly aggressive" play and ability to keep from being knocked off the puck will be appreciated by some NHL club.

I would say there's a 99.9% chance he won't be back. Age alone will tell you that...he played 3 years of juniors and 3 years at MSU...he's getting up there in age and if he wants a shot at another level, he needs to go now.

What reason does he have to stay. The Mavericks will not improve their roster drastically next year. The problem with penalties he is having. He has many reasons to leave, not many to stay.

While I do agree he is leaving, and with good reason, I also believe the Mavs will be much improved next season. Kevin Murdock is the second best goaltender, statistically, for the best team in the USHL right now. Tyler Pitlick is a big-time recruit. Eriah Hayes is a big kid who will fill a power forward need. Matt Leitner and Eli Zuck are also excellent players in the USHL. Plus, all of the others that return will be that much more experienced. I'm looking forward to next year.

He's a great player and brings loads of intensity and a big heart ... But having said that, I'm not sure he helped the Mavs much this year. Sure, he got a lot of points, but how many points did he not get, and how points did his linemates not get, because he was in the box? In theory, I like him as a player, and I'll never forget his goal against Minnesota last year. But I think it's time for Trevor to move on.

Most interesting topics for discussion next year:

1) The Mavericks new Goaltender, first one in 4 years. Is it Austin Lees job or does freshman Kevin Murdock have a chance to start?

2) How good can Justin Jokinen be for the Mavericks next year?

3) Will Andrew Sackrison find himself next season?

4) How will the defense hold up? Will new recruit Tyler Elbrecht make an immediate impact.

Is Danny Heath coming next year? Or is he staying in Juniors for another year?

I'm wondering the same thing. He was scheduled to join them for the 2009-10 season, but he only played one game for the Tri-City Storm this season. That was the opening game of the season. I believe he has been injured ever since.

I guess we know the answer to this!
