Minnesota State wrapped up nonconference play with its 3-0 win over RIT on Saturday night. The Mavericks have 14 games remaining in the regular season -- all against WCHA opponents, starting with North Dakota on Friday and Saturday in Grand Forks.
The Mavericks went 6-1-1 in nonconference play, their best record outside the WCHA since joining the league in 1999.
"It's good," coach Troy Jutting said. "Everybody comes out and plays hard. Obviously, we'd like to be 8-0.
Minnesota State has had losing records in nonconference play just twice in 11 seasons. Before this year, their best record outside the league was 6-2-0, a record they hit twice (00-01 and 07-08). This year, their only blemishes were a tie and a loss to Nebraska-Omaha, a team that will join the WCHA next season.
"We've had a few (nonconference) games the last couple of years that have hurt us," Jutting said. "All in all, I'm pleased we could get out of it with just one loss in eight nonconference games."
